I'd rented at least 15 cars in my lifetime and never had a problem. The unexpected, can happen at any time. I hadn't taken the insurance when they asked at the counter. I was only renting the car for 2 days. The insurance was $25 per day. I could kick myself. Now I have to file a claim with my car insurance, and I may get dinged for having an accident. I don't have a deductible, but I still don't want an accident on my record. It seems like the smallest accident can raise the cost of your insurance. I might have been better off just taking the car rental insurance. They cover everything and there is no deductible and no ding on your own personal car insurance.
Then I thought, maybe the credit card company I used to rent the car would have rental car insurance coverage. I was so happy when I called them and they said I did, until they asked me what state I was from. When I said Minnesota, they said, I had to use my personal car insurance first and they would pick up anything my personal insurance didn't cover. I learned my lesson, think twice before you decide not to take the insurance that is offered you when you rent a car. It may save you lots of money on your personal car insurance in the long run.
