was driving down a very busy freeway when I came upon a piece of truck tire debris. It came up so fast, that I couldn't dodge it. It looked like it was brand new as it wasn't moved to the side of the road: it was right in the middle. I heard a loud noise when I ran over it and waited to see if the car would continue to drive smoothly as I continued down the highway. I was OK for about 30 seconds and then I heard a rubbing noise. I drove to the side of the rode and sure enough the back bumper had come loose. The tire must have jetted to the back of the car and hit the bumper so hard it was dislodged from the car where it attaches to the side. It was rubbing on my tire. I knew I'd have to get a replacement rental.
I'd rented at least 15 cars in my lifetime and never had a problem. The unexpected, can happen at any time. I hadn't taken the insurance when they asked at the counter. I was only renting the car for 2 days. The insurance was $25 per day. I could kick myself. Now I have to file a claim with my car insurance, and I may get dinged for having an accident. I don't have a deductible, but I still don't want an accident on my record. It seems like the smallest accident can raise the cost of your insurance. I might have been better off just taking the car rental insurance. They cover everything and there is no deductible and no ding on your own personal car insurance.
Then I thought, maybe the credit card company I used to rent the car would have rental car insurance coverage. I was so happy when I called them and they said I did, until they asked me what state I was from. When I said Minnesota, they said, I had to use my personal car insurance first and they would pick up anything my personal insurance didn't cover. I learned my lesson, think twice before you decide not to take the insurance that is offered you when you rent a car. It may save you lots of money on your personal car insurance in the long run.
