This is a great time of the year to visit the Wisconsin Dells. I took a drive from Minneapolis about a week ago. Some of the leaves had changed, but they weren't at peak colors yet. The outdoor water parks are closed, but there is still a lot to do. It doesn't matter if it is for a girls or guys weekend or a family trip, you won't be disappointed.
We opted to stay at Christmas Mountain Village, a resort with golf, swimming, hot tub, mini golf and lots of resort activities. I felt like I had the best of both worlds, the lush outdoors and the opportunity to go downtown to shop. We packed a lot into our short 3 day trip. After checking in, we took a drive to Ho Chunk Casino. We didn't stay for the medium's performance, but could see that a lot of people enjoyed the show. On the way, we passed a very large antique barn. This is a must see if you love to meander. The casino doesn't have a band, but you can catch music at Bobber's Island Grill, Cruisin' Chubbys, Reef Night Club, and Music at Edge-O-Dells Bar and Resort.
Sunday was a great day, the sun was shining and the temperature was in the high 60;s. For golf lovers, it would have been a perfect day to hit the course. We opted for going to Devil's Lake State Park. There were so many people there we had to wait in line to get our park sticker. As we walked the path, we heard accents from all over, including Germany. Every time I go to that park, I see someone from another country. We met hikers that had been hiking all over the world including Mt. Kilimanjaro. We enjoyed the scenery, exercise, people watching, and photo ops. After the hike, we went shopping at the Outlet Mall. They have a nice variety of shops, but the really interesting shopping is downtown Dells. The little boutiques have some unusual things.
We skipped Ripley's Believe It Or Not, the Duck Boats, and the boat tour of the Dells. I've been to the Dells several times and have done it all. I'd highly recommend any of those as well as a picture of your group at the Old Time Portrait shop. For the young at heart, stop at Knuckle Heads, Wizard Quest, Timbavati Wildlife Park, or Mt Olympus Theme Park. Pick up a coupon book at a local vendor for discounts.
Monday we wound down and enjoyed relaxing in the outdoor hot tub followed by a round of mini golf. Christmas Mountain Village also offers kayaking, but it wasn't available on Monday. Every year I go to the Wisconsin Dells and do something different. It's a great place to explore. We missed the magic show Rick Wilcox puts on, but saw the movie, The Girl On The Train, which I highly recommend. Ghost Outpost Haunted House caught our eyes as we drove down the strip, but we didn't have time to stop. Of course if you go in the summer, you must try the outdoor water parks, but fall is a great time to see a large array of other things.
