Art-A-Whirl is the largest open studio tour in the country. Artwork is exhibited in more than 60 locations throughout a dense area of Northeast Minneapolis, including studio buildings, art galleries, homes, storefronts, businesses, and restaurants. The event is free and open to everyone. This year was the 19th annual event and there were more than 500 artists with more than 20 mediums of art including clay, jewelry, furniture, glass, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Northeast Minneapolis is definitely a thriving artist haven. An old mill in St. Anthony Main is being transformed into modern living spaces for artists to live and work, opening 2014.
I started at the Northrup King Building at 1500 Jackson Street NE. There was a large parking space, a grassy area to lounge, and a food truck. This location houses 250 artists. There was so much to look at, that I spent the majority of my time there. The artists’ opened their studios and gave demonstrations, live performances, and large-scale exhibitions. I loved the buildings I visited as well as the art. Many of them were built in the early 1900s. One of my favorites was the Thorp Building. Plan to visit next year.
It is always held the 3rd weekend in May
