It might be a scary thought to go on a cruise by yourself, but it doesn't have to be. If your friends and family can't get time off or they just can't afford it, consider traveling by yourself. If you are hesitant, find a group in your area with one of your interests. In metropolitan areas there is a group for every thing. They range from wine lovers, stamp collectors, marketers, teachers, to what ever you can think of. Check out Meet Ups online. Go to a few meetings and find a group planning a trip. That way you will know a few people before you go.
I've been cruising on several cruise lines while I am getting certified with CLIA (Cruise Line International Association). The thing I've noticed is the friendliness of cruisers. There are so many open areas on a ship, that it is hard not to strike up a conversation with someone standing or sitting next to you.
Usually you can get onboard around noon, even though the ship doesn't leave port until 4:00 pm. That gives you time to have lunch and check out the layout of the ship. Make sure to check out the lounges, lido deck, art gallery, hot tubs, spa, and workout center. Sign up for a workout class. You just may meet someone with your same interests.
The bon voyage party is usually high energy. Everyone is in the mood for a party. There is music and dancing. Lots of people join in with line dancing. This makes it easy for a single person to join in.
Or, if you are not a dancer, just find a lounge chair and soak up the sun. An easy way to strike up a conversation is to ask your neighbor if this is their first cruise. If they say no, ask them where they have cruised before. Also ask them if they've been on this cruise ship before and what their favorite activities are.
Daily, the cruise ship gives you an activity list. It is a good way to plan your day. Decide if you want to eat early or late, which show you want to go to, Broadway or comic, and if you want to go to an art auction, a spa, enjoy mini golf or the casino, take in karaoke, or get dance lessons.
The formal dining room is also a good place to meet people. Upon entering the dining room, tell the hostess you'd like to be seated with someone. They will seat you with people that have said they'd prefer to eat with other people. It is fun to meet people from other countries or regions. You can make friends and learn a lot.
There are also group excursions where you can meet a lot of people. There is a bus that takes you from the port to your destination. This is usually the best place to strike up a conversation.
Everyone keeps being amazed at how quickly life passes by, so do yourself a favor, don't think about it any longer - make a choice, just decide, book your ticket and explore the world and keep on doing it, year after year, city after city.
You'll become far more interesting than the person you are now. And you will learn
to love life on a totally different level.
"Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions," says the Dalai Lama
Make your life a wonderful adventure.
